This summer tell if mangoes are ripened with chemicals: Here's how

Calcium carbide is injected into mangoes, releasing acetylene gas when it comes into contact with moisture. Mangoes can ripen quickly in this manner, but by consuming them, people may suffer from skin irritation, respiratory problems, and digestive issues. Fruit traders also use 'ethylene treatment', which involves exposing the fruit to ethylene gas.

The next observation is that do not forget to look at the mangoes' colour when buying them. If a mango is ripe with chemicals, it will have green spots on it.

Also, observe the mango's shape to determine if it has been chemically ripened. Mangoes that have been chemically ripened are small in size and dripping with juice. Furthermore, mangoes that have a white or blue mark should not be purchased.

Put the mangoes in a bucket of water and observe which mangoes sink and which ones float. Natural ripe mangoes sink in water. However, if you see any mango floating on top, it has been chemically cooked.

Mangoes that are ripe and sweet are very easy to identify. Press the mango lightly while buying it to check if it is ripe. If a mango feels hard in some places when you press it, it may have been cooked with chemicals before it was sold.
